Hedge cutting
What can be done with a hedge
- 01
Trimming
The sides and top cut back to a neat line, the regular job that keeps a hedge in shape.
- 02
Topping
The height brought down. A tall hedge can be topped by a metre or more in one go.
- 03
Reduction
A hedge that's grown wide is cut back hard on the sides to win back the path or the garden.
- 04
Shaping
Square, tapered or rounded, so the hedge looks the way you want it from the house.

Good to know
Every hedge is different
- Leylandii does not grow back from old brown wood. Cut back past the green and it stays bare, so it's best kept trimmed and topped often.
- Laurel takes a hard cut and grows back. Cut it back by hand where you can, as a hedge trimmer leaves torn brown leaves.
- Beech holds its brown leaves through winter. Privet grows fast and wants trimming more often.
- The Wildlife Act restricts cutting hedgerows from 1 March to 31 August, to protect nesting birds. It is aimed at hedgerows in the countryside rather than garden hedges, but check any hedge for nests before a summer cut. The Wildlife Act on the NPWS website
