Tree pruning and crown reduction

Tree pruning, tree trimming, shaping, crown reduction, lifting and thinning across Dublin, Kildare, Meath and Wicklow. Most trees that have got too big don't need to come down.

40 years' experience in the team. Mon to Sat, 8am to 10pm, and calls outside those hours are answered.

What the crown work words mean

  1. 01

    Crown reduction

The whole canopy is brought down and in by cutting branches back to a side branch. The tree is smaller but keeps its natural shape.

  2. 02

    Crown lifting

The lowest branches are taken off so there's headroom over a path, a drive or a road, and more light underneath.

  3. 03

    Crown thinning

Some inner branches are taken out so more light and wind get through. The tree stays the same size.

  4. 04

    Shaping and deadwood

Crossing, rubbing, dead and broken branches are taken out, and the tree is brought back into a tidy shape.

Good to know

Worth knowing first

  • Tree trimming and tree pruning usually mean the same job: branches cut back to a side branch so the tree keeps its natural shape.
  • Topping a tree flat across the top (lopping) leaves weak regrowth. A reduction cuts back to side branches instead.
  • Many trees are best pruned in late autumn and winter when the leaves are off. Cherries and plums are usually pruned in summer.
  • A tree preservation order covers pruning too, not only felling.
